Annual Aquinas Lecture 2023 | Dr. Matthew Levering
Просмотров 833Год назад
In this lecture, "Christ's Cross at the Center of the Mystical Body: Scripture, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Recent Theology", Prof. Levering argues that the theology of the Church should flow from the theology of the Cross, since to be a Christian is to share in the saving power of Christ’s Cross and to be configured to it. When Christians fail to apprehend the centrality of the Cross, their unders...

    Could someone kindly tell me whether I have correctly understood the key differience with how Aquinas understands the resistabillity of grace, contra Augustine? Augustine sees all grace as intrinsically efficacious (or irresistible), since the creaturely will has nothingness as its only independent source. Therefore the only thing that distingishes sufficient grace from efficient grace is the strength of the impulse from God. Aquinas, however, makes a real distinction between the nature of sufficient grace versus intrinsically effectual grace, since, following Aristotle, the creaturely will is actually informed by being, as opposed to the platonic notion that the creature is devoid of the actual substance of being. This means that sufficient grace must be cooperated with by the will (which has actually been informed by grace) in order for it to go from potency to act, thus grounding the responsibillity of the will to act. Augustine, on the other hand, places all the responsibility to act with the will of God alone. Have I understood this correctly?

    My mom met him when he visited the Art Institute of Chicago when she studied there from 1948-52. She was in the back of a packed room by the door as Dali was mobbed by everyone. Apparently he wanted a quick exit and dropped to the floor, crawling between his admirers legs to the door. He stood up right in front of her and signaled she stay quiet, and ran out the door without saying a word. My mother was equally talented, and devoted her life to her family and students.

    Very many thanks. I came across the Dali painting as a 10 yr old Catholic kid, and was startled and drawn into it. Likewise with Dali's other Christ figure, 'Corpus Hypercubus' ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crucifixion_(Corpus_Hypercubus) ). I was unaware of John of the Cross' sketch, which in some ways I find far more 'living' (ironic, but there it is) than Dali's - tho each has its own resonance.

    The Beatific Vision is seeing Jesus in His glory, and also seeing the Person no one ever saw directly - the Father. There will always be limits to our perception of God even on the level of this Vision. But that's the real beauty of it - we'll keep chasing the limits eternally without ever reaching it. Thereby, the more we gaze upon God, the more wonderful and beautiful He will appear - as though, to us, He "grows" in beauty everyday, continually and eternally. That's what makes the Beatific Vision inexhaustible in our awe of the LORD God.

    • @John-ng8fx
      @John-ng8fx 17 дней назад

      No, probably not. It’s a pretty clear teaching that individuals’ perception and splendor is correlated with their merits and position in heaven. The idea of God perceivably “growing” in beauty as the source of our “inexhaustible awe” is entirely unnecessary and honestly approximates blasphemy. Not for suggesting God would appear to change, because you seem to make it clear that He isn’t actually changing, but because it suggests that beholding God in and of Himself, even at our limited capacity, isn’t sufficient for perpetual admiration. God fully comprehends **everything**, including Himself, and is perfectly content within Himself. To be sustained at, by, and with the most infinitesimal drop of His perfection would be enough to produce permanent awe and joy.

    • @john4elohim
      @john4elohim 17 дней назад

      @@John-ng8fx _"....because it suggests that beholding God in and of Himself, even at our limited capacity, isn’t sufficient for perpetual admiration."_ --> Thanks, I understand my error. Any extent of our gaze upon His glory, no matter how small, must and will produce inexhaustible, everlasting admiration. _"The idea of God perceivably “growing” in beauty as the source of our “inexhaustible awe” is entirely unnecessary and honestly approximates blasphemy."_ --> I agree. _"To be sustained at, by, and with the most infinitesimal drop of His perfection would be enough to produce permanent awe and joy."_ --> Very well said. This is a new perspective for me. Then, based on our exchange, I'd say that our enjoyment of God is (for lack of a better word) 'multi-layered'. Our least perception of His glory, even without any degree of growth, is enough to dazzle us for eternity; but that perception will also expand everyday without an end.

    The observance of Christmas on December 25 was not introduced until 353 A.D. The chief pastor at Rome, Julius I (336-352), had the imperial archives of Rome searched for the exact date of the birth of Christ. A subsequent pastor of Rome, Liberius (352-366), then fixed the celebration of Christmas for December 25. Justin Martyr (died 150 A.D.) writes: “Christ was born in Bethlehem, as may be gathered from the census records.” Another writer, Tertullian (155 or 160-220 or 230 A.D.), testifies that in the census of Augustus the Roman archives have provided the most reliable testimony of the birth of the Savior.

    That's just it. There is a good "biblical" argument for why the 25th. I will accept that it can be debated that the Christians piggy-backed Saturnalia and Sol Invictus but the Winter Solstice has been recognized since the Neolithic period over 12,000 years ago. The reality is that the modern Jesus was born at the First Council of Nicaea, between May-Aug of 325 AD under Emporer Constantine. That's why December 25th was not recognized as the birth of Jesus Christ until 333 AD.

      celebration of Christmas started before the emergence of Christendom, one of the theory is that Constantine put christmas on 25th to standardize all religious celebration together. christmas and saturnalia celebration were celebrate side by side at that time. Sol invictus was another celebration that came later to be incorporated into 25th dec.

    Modern philosophers have presented counterarguments to many of Hume's objections. Eg: "In his book Miracles C. S. Lewis notes that Hume can know that all experience favors his argument only by knowing in advance that all evidence in favor of miracle claims is false. But since he refuses to investigate miracles, he can know that these claims are false only by assuming that they do not happen. This is clearly circular reasoning, for Hume's position is certainly not evident a priori." (Skepticism: David Hume Gary R. Habermas ) "Hume‟s arguments against miracle are inconsistent with scientific and empirical principle he set out to defend. Generally, the doctrine of miracle is unacceptable to science because it (science) is rooted in the principle of regularities of nature. A critical look at the Big Bang theory which is accepted as a creditable scientific explanation of the origin of the universe explains that development of life is a onetime event and never repeated. If this is the case, why should possibility of miracle be denied on regularities condition? One can argue in this respect, that miracles are scientific events. " (AN ASSESSMENT OF DAVID HUME’S IMPOSSIBILITY OF MIRACLE Olubanjo-Olufowobi, Olufunso) "Hume's fourth criterion states that the miracle claims of many different religions cancel out rival ideologies. But such a criterion would be valid only if all miracle claims were true. That one religion may back its revelation claims with invalid "miracles" is no reason to reject a religion possessing valid claims. Inept systems cannot cancel a religion that may be supported by evidence that is shown to be probable. " (Skepticism: David Hume Gary R. Habermas )
